Hi guys,
My 1957 Pickup had a 327 V8 put into it a few years ago. The guy who put it in has since passed away, and I am trying to figure out where this engine came from.

There is a plate on the left side, just under the passenger valve cover. It is flat and looks a small extension of the block.

The only numbers that I can read stamped into this block are:

V062 HP

The HP is separate and is about 3/4 inch or so away from the other letters.

Does anyone have any ideas, or are there any other places that I can look to get the serial number off this motor?

It just looks like that front plate was stamped too softly. I've cleaned the area thoroughly, and all I can read is the V062 HP. It looks like there are some numbers before it, but I can't read any of them.

Should I take a light sand paper to it to see if I can get down to the metal?

Not too sure what to do . . .

Thanks to anyone who might be able to help on this . . . .

The engine serial number is stamped on the passenger side of the block, on a machined pad just ahead of the cylinder head. If you can get that number, that will help us figure out what it originally came from.

That's the pad where I saw the numbers. I can't read the first few numbers, but the last ones are ....V062 HP.

Hy Joe VR, if you're sure it's a 327, then it's from a 1965,66,or 67 Corvette, if it is possibly a 350 it could be from a 1969 Chevelle with a manual trans, or a 1969 Chevrolet with a manual trans.

How do I tell if it is a 350? Are there any other identifying marks on it?

There should be a block casting number on the bellhousing flange.

Hey Guys,
Here are the numbers that I was able to pull from the truck:

The numbers stamped on the front of the block (on the machined pad):
V026 HP

The numbers stamped on the back of the block:
3970010

The casting numbers look like it's a 1968 motor, but I can't tell anything from the V026 HP number.

Somebody told me that the HP stood for High Performance, instead of the regular passenger motor, but I can't find any more info online. Any additional help would be great.

Thanks guys!

-Joe

Casting #3970010 comes up as a 1969-1975 350, truck application according to the American V-8 Data Book. The HP code looks to come up as a 300 horse 4bbl 350, Chevelle, Camaro, Nova application. Might have been a case of a block shortage, so they used a truck casting to build a passenger spec engine.
