Hi Guys --
I have not installed a crank in a long time. When the crank is in the block with everything clean et, new bearings, cap bolts just finger tight, shouldn't it spin freely? It doesn't want to turn. Wrong bearings?

Boo grin

yup something is wrong. try it with one cap at a time... or try it with no caps? Its almost mandatory that you plastiguauge any new bearings anyway....

Have you had the crank machined or are you just installing new bearings? If you have a crank reground to say 0.020" under sized, you then need to buy 0.020" over sized bearings. You always want to plastigauge the clearances after you have the crank done to make sure the machinist did the job correctly and verify he gave you the correct bearings. Also make sure the lock tang on the back side of the bearing matches up with the notch on the top edge of the bearing journal. Crank should turn easily by hand even with all the caps torqued. The initial fitting should be done before the main rear seal is installed.

Good luck.

They were the wrong bearings!!! They almost fit, but with the clearance problems I took them bank to the parts store and, sure enough, we checked the numbers -- wrong bearings!

Boo
