Hi Gang,

I'm new to the forum and have already jumped in and confused everbody. I did a search like they said to do first, saw a string concerning an engine swap and jumped in. It seemed like a good idea.

I just bought an unrestored '61 Chevy Apache with a 235 6 cyl (not running) and 3 speed manual. My intention is to get it fixed up with a running engine in primer and sell it. The 6 cyl doesn't look like a cost effective rebuild.

Can anyone give me the quick and dirty on sticking a 350 in it with either a 350 Turbo or even bolting it up to the existing 3 speed? My main question is engine mounts. Will bolt in mounts work and are they stock are after-market? Any hints on fabricationg mounts for the automatic trans?

I'll stop here and see if I'm headed in the right direction.

Do you know why the 235 doesn't run?

No, the engine was just lying (literally) in the truck. The previous guy started to pull it for rebuild and changed his mind about the whole project. He said there was rod noise when he heard it run. Rebuild quote from a NAPA machine shop was anything between $500-$1000. Previous owner had ordered rings and gaskets which were included. Engine is now out of truck. I thought if I were going to spend the money, I might as well stick a small block in it. TT

Where are you in Tennessee? I run the auto mechanics shop at McGavock High School in Nashville. If you're close, maybe I can advise you about whether it's a good idea to build up the original engine. A V-8 swap is going to be time-consuming and expensive, compared to rebuilding the 235. The 61 model will be a full-pressure oiler, and with a good rebuild, it should serve you pretty well for normal driving. Parts for the late model 235 are fairly plentiful, and pretty reasonably priced. Figure on a minimum of $2500.00 to do the V-8 swap.
