Our stovebolt editor thought there might be someone on this forum that could help. I'm trying to re-locate the gas tank to under bed between rails in back. I don't want the filler neck in wooden bed. I've seen guys put them through flat sheet metal of box. But I'm trying to avoid C-notching the frame. Any body been down this road before and if so I'd sure like to hear from you.

bluenoser,

I did a relocated tank on my truck. It is a 4400 with a 12' flatbed...big rails sitting on the frame and lots of room...should have been easy. It was a [censored].

My tank top was even with the top of the factory frame rail. This creates a "no drop" situation for the fuel filler.

I ended up putting the fill through the rails on the bed, and even then the drop was marginal.

I even contemplated using the factory fill through the cab and running it out the back and into the tank..too funky!

There are nice hatch covers available to mount in the bed of the truck. They have some made of aluminum with neat fasteners, and they compliment the bed area. If I had to do it again, I would use one of these items. They look nice, they are functional, and they get the job done.

Dah What year? Why do you want to relocate? There hasnt been a case of a gas tank exploding in the cab. if it catches fire it burns to the outside. Try an S-10 tank.

I dont think most guys relo the tank for that reason, but more for a practical purpose such as being a big guy weight or heightwise.
Know of 2 diff gents that moved the tank,
1 bacause he was 6ft4 grin
1 because he was 300 plus :p
Both loved their trucks and wouldnt think of gettin rid o them wink
By moving the tank you gain that extra depth by moving the seat rails back,
Its not much but sometimes an inch is alot eek

I put an aftermarket tank between the rails of my '55 1/2-ton. For the filler, I had a piece made that mounted to the inside of the driver's side bedside (facing inward) and fab'd a filler tube that used rubber slip tube on each end. Not the easiest solution, but it avoided having to put the filler in the bed wood or use an awful gas "door" on the fender.

I saw a website that I found a link for on this site where the owner put the tank along the passanger side frame rail. He then cut a hole in the rear fender and welded in a gas door and box kit, installed the filler neck there and ran it down to the tank. It looked pretty nice when it was done.

I had a tank inside the passenger side frame on 46 for many years. Used the stock filler sticking out of the cab, cut off the filler tube and welded on an elbow and ran that pipe down through the floor to new tank. I had trouble filling this tank and finally got tired of this and went back to original tank, but probably could have fixed the vent problem.
