I've got a good strong 1959 235 motor that I am planning on putting into my 51 pickup.
Since I'm doing a close to stock restoration I want to keep the 6 volt foot starter. I know that won't be an issue with my 12volt upgrade.
Got the correct bell housing to accept the foot starter linkage and motor mounts, but can I just change out the ring gear on the flywheel to a 139 tooth version and bolt in the 6volt starter or do I need to find a flywheel, and clutch set up from a 216 to get compatability? It is an 11" clutch plate.
Is the flywheel diameter for an 11" clutch the same as a 9".

thanks

You could use a later model 12 volt foot starter with the later model flywheel clutch and pressureplate. If the flywheel and clutch from the 51 is good use it on the 235. Just be sure to get the right combo.

The flywheel diameter where the ring gear presses on is a different size between 6 and 12 volt, so you will need to use a 6 volt flywheel if you want to use a 6 volt starter and a 12 volt flywheel with a 12 volt starter. 1955-59 trucks used a foot starter if you want to use a 12 volt set-up, although a 6 volt starter works fine on 12 volts.
As far as flywheel diameters between 9" and 11" clutch the outside diameter is the same the only difference is where the flywheel is drilled for the pressure plate.

That '59 bellhousing won't bolt to your '51 mounts.

Scdascda, I considered that option, but was not sure if it was do-able. I was told by my motor builder that all drive gears were the same-9 tooth.

If they were all the same there would not be a problem with the ring gear fitting them. Maybe I don't understand the problem, but I am running a 12 volt starter on my 55.1 which originally had 6 volt. My son found me a starter that fit, but he is one with the junkyard stuff. scott
