I just bought a '57 6400 grain truck. It has a 261 six (determined by block number and captain bars). The oil needs to be changed. I've read on the internet that 1958 was the first year for a full flow oil filter cartridge on the 261. So I think it must need a bypass cartridge but the parts guy is trying to get me to buy the full flow filter. What is the correct Wix, AC, or Purolator filter for my truck. Thanks.

welcome to the garage John, we'll help clear the fog - the terms apply to the container and hookup configuration not necessarily the cartridge, if it doesn't have a one in the can, measure it and get one that fits, there are a number of different "bypass" type filters, and likely a variety of "full flow" possible, but the design of the oil flow in the engine doesn't dictate what filter fits the can

Hy Johnfog, the part number for the original GM supplied filter element is 5572288, that was AC part number P-115 [ that number may be no longer used] and tha Napa cross to the GM number is FIL 1100 $12.69, but as red58 says many different filters for those engines have been marketed over the years, so it would be a good idea to remove the element and look for numbers,or take measurements of the element, and container when you go element shopping, hope that helps.

Johnfog,

What brand and number filter is the parts guy recommending?

There is one-size of 58-63 261 full-flow canister filter cartridge (I think that 1143 is the NAPA number). I doubt if that filter would fit in any of the 1qt or 2qt by-pass canisters that I have seen. It is taller than any 1qt canister filter that I have seen and shorter than any 2qt filter that I have seen.

Do you have the old filter cartridge to bring to the parts guy (he might have dimensions in his catalog)?

Thanks for all the tips. From the suggestions, I will remove the old filter and measure or take it to the parts store to find which one is correct.
