While trying to start my 41 chevy thats been setting for 35 years the motor kicked back and broke the bendix and the snout off my starter. In all my years of messing with the old chevys I've never had this happen what did I do wrong. I'm pretty sure I had the correct starter to flywheel combo. | | |

I have had several "snouts" break off on starters, but it was always a issue with the starter drive gear and its little retention collar.
After sitting for that length of time, the possibilities of what caused this problem would be endless.
Your post doesn't indicate exactly what vehicle you are referring to..a '41 stock truck!

I got the old guy running Sunday afternoon after changing the flywheel to a later model 12 volt wheel. Will the snout from a 12 volt starter swap with the 6. By the way the old boy ran realy good after the 35 year rest. | | |
