already took the tank out of the cab
that's just a very basic start to get it to what you see in the photos on my wifes truck .............................
do a search for my name and read the gas tank pages. i have lots of info i have discussed already............. lots
tanks inc.
http://www.tanksinc.com/index.cfm/p...ry_id=69/home_id=59/mode=prod/prd128.htmcomes e/w antiroll shut-off vent.
used stock filler neck welded w/ 2'' pipe.
gas line 2'' connects the tank to the filler.
cut the new tank to fit the truck :: cut the old truck to fit the tank::
cut off the as received new tank filler neck & seal/weld that hole off.
locate a new 2'' filler stub for the new tank for inlet AFTER cutting and measuring where to cut a hole in the bed wall.
make a mock-up using the old filler neck to a new steel sheet that attaches to the outside bed wall.
measure and cut U shape to clear emergency brake cross bar AFTER cutting truck frame triangle plate. which means you should probably remove the bed completely. mark where you might weld the tank tabs first.
cut the stock frame corner brace out so the tank can fit up against the bed's bottom cross struts/bars.
i used the bed cross metal bed struts as an anchor point to weld 4 [pre-drill for 1/2'' rod] 1.5-2''x 1.5'' straps to hold the tank up high.
the tank is held up w/ four rods. double nutted at the top and single at the bottom. two cross metal straps 2'' x3/16'' hold the tank up from the bottom. all has dense rubber padding glued w/ E6000 glue top and bottom where ever the tank touches the metal bed struts and bottom cross braces.
weld on a plate to the cab side where the old filler WAS.
NOTE::
we moved the axle when fitting the new 1977 , 3.40:1 chevy burb 4x4 rearend
back by 2.5-3.0''it centers in the wheel well far better than the 1.5'' offset sold by vendors.http://s67.photobucket.com/albums/h298/1951otter/?action=view¤t=0035595-R1-014-5A.jpgsee all my photos........... towards the bottom.
good luck
it's worth the long hours of work.
WHY
i have a very simple crank down cable
http://s67.photobucket.com/albums/h298/1951otter/?action=view¤t=24-1.jpghttp://s67.photobucket.com/albums/h298/1951otter/?action=view¤t=23-1.jpghttp://s67.photobucket.com/albums/h298/1951otter/?action=view¤t=20-1.jpghttp://s67.photobucket.com/albums/h298/1951otter/?action=view¤t=2748800-R1-E026.jpg to operate the rear spare tire and DON'T HAVE to groval in the wet/snow/mud/rain/dirt 10 days or 10 years from now to lower the spare tire when she gets a flat && she can also. Which is where MOST put their after-market gas tank.
THAT's what makes all this work
IT's a whole game plan when you think about what it is, when one does work to a truck that we'll keep forever .... YOUNG
