Been tinkering with the ol' 58 since I drug it home in March. Two weeks ago discovered the fuel pump was bad - I ordered a new one & finally got around to installing it today.

The truck started & moved under its own power today for the first time in 15 years!!!!

Smooth idle - no missing - no smoke

I love it!

Of course it is nowhere near ready to drive but the major stuff is out of the way!.

The first thing I did to the truck was replace the rear main seal. I then rebuilt the carb - 15 year old gas had all but ruined it.

Then two weeks ago I flushed the tank, blew the lines & hooked it all up, but no gas - new pump & pow!

The truck has a major fuel leak at the pump. One of the brass fittings is cracked. I couldn't find a replacement at Menards or Ace hardware. It sprays gas pretty bad.

The oil filter is leaking oil very bad - That may just need to be tightened down.

I need to rebuild the master cylinder. I will eventually replace with a power - dual res. one. but for now if I can get it to stop when I push the pedal I will be happy.

Finally - there is a very minor wiring issue where the headlights don't turn on, but I know where that is & it needs an ignition switch.

Once all of this is done - all minor issues - the truck will be road ready!

It will be on the road this summer!

I've got three weeks of lay off coming in July & August - I will have time to tinker.

Any one know where I can find the 1/8 to 5/16 brass fitting to connect the fuel line to the fuel pump?

They are a industiral supply in northlake il. They have every thing You could want screws ,bolts, hose , fittings , Big Chevy is right .

I found the fitting today at true-value - fixed the fuel leak.

I have not had a chance to look too close at the oil filter leak, but it looks like there is a rubber gasket at the top of the can when I open it that may be out of place or bad.

Anyone have any info about these external oil filters - including where to get the elements?

Should be able to get them at the flaps, try Napa if you have one close. You'll have to make sure to tell them if you have an AC or Fram canister, as the element is different. I beleive there is also a Short and Tall variants on the AC filter. A new gasket will come with the element. You migth also check with some of the larger farm stores, like Farm & Fleet, they tend to carry those as well for ag applications (especially Olivers, whcih used AC parts)

I'll try to find the new filter tomorrow - I have plenty of FLAPS & NAPA & Farm & Fleet.

Didn't know about the different sizes though - I'll take a look at it in the morning - seems pretty tall (maybe 8 inches?) - based on what you've said I'd guess AC tall.

easiest thing to do is take the old filter and cover in to the parts store to be sure it matches.

I took a close look at the oil filter this morning. The 'O' ring was out of alignment. I got it installed correctly & no more leak.

Now I need to get to my long list of other things - I'll start another thread for that though.
