Hi,
There is a 4 speed 1954 Chevy 4 speed on ebay in the UK that looks similar to my 41 4 speed.
Are the later gearboxes synchronized, or are they the same crash box as frown the 41.
Just wondering as I'm not getting any better with the crash box and might swap it out if it's not a major job.
Thanks
D

The 4-speed transmission became a synchro-mesh, helical gear transmission in 1948.

Thanks, and is it interchangeable/compatible with the earlier boxes?

In 1947 they made the switch halfway through the year so it may be a bolt in and maybe not.

The redesigned synchronized transmission case was wider, higher, and longer than the earlier 4-speed.

The bolt pattern is is different between the old spur gear and the later Synchro. I think the the clutch housing from the later one will fit the engine, but that causes starter linkage problems. The change was done routinely 50 to 60 years ago, but then we had the luxury of having salvage yards full of stuff to make the change.

Thanks for the info. Looks like I'll have to practice more with the double clutch or look for a later engine and box.

Cheers
