I have a 12v Delco gen on a 235 in my 49 3100. I'm expericing a discharge indication during increased RPM's and a charge at idle. Just the opposite of what is supposed to happening. This problem is intermentent. Gen is putting out per the spec. wiring is all new and connections tight. Gen has been polrized. Could this be caused by a poor gound of the voltage regulator? Any suggestions?

Almost sounds like the ammeter is wired backwards. What does the ammeter show if you just flip the lights on without the engine running? If it shows a charge, reverse those wires.

Good thought however with the engine off when you turn on the lights it shows a discharge

Your fan belt is slipping. There is not much contact area for the belt on that setup. It needs to be real tight. Sometimes a longer belt helps.

Too simple however you are correct and it fixed the issue.Upon further inspection you could see evidence of slipage on the gen pully. Can't see it untill you take the belt off and look for it.

I have to mention to others who read this , the belt was not loose by conventional methods. I'm running a 15/32 width belt. I think I will move to a 17/32 and see if that provides more bite.

Thanks a lot I would have never thought

The belt contact area of the pulley could have gotten polished from years of slipping to the point the belt can't get enough traction. Try removing the pulley and have an automotive machine shop beadblast the belt contact area to give the belt something to grab.
