For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: May 2008 Posts: 66 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: May 2008 Posts: 66 | Okay I recently installed a T5 with a new rear end on my 235. I also have fenton header set-up as well which for now only has about 18" down pipes for exhaust. Last night I was taking it for a loud cruise and wanted to go through all the gears to see what it would do. (by that I do not mean getting on it) I went through the first 4 with no problem, then when I shifted to 5th I bet I had barely 1000 rpm and no throttle response like the truck didnt want to go any faster. I was doing like 50 at the most and had alot more pedal left but the truckjust didnt want to go -any suggestions? | | | | | Joined: Oct 2002 Posts: 4,066 Bolter | | Bolter Joined: Oct 2002 Posts: 4,066 | I had the same set up... when you go into 5 th you need to be doing 65.. or there about.. probably about 2200 rpm. what is your rear end ratio? the fifth gear is your over drive.. The tranny was rebuilt for a V8 -i know this because my friend had it rebuilt and the input splines are i think 24 which matched up to a nova 10.5 clutch disk and pressure plate. I was also thinking about timing maybe or I had also heard that alot guys go to dual or four barrel carbs because of this problem. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2002 Posts: 4,066 Bolter | | Bolter Joined: Oct 2002 Posts: 4,066 | my set up had the s-10 five speed, with a blazer six lug rear end with 2:73 gears.. a 58..235, fenton headers.. duals
the only time I could go into fifth was at least 60 and then it wasnt to bad as long as I had an open hi-way, I could keep increaseing the speed,
if it runs ok in the other gears I dont see why you would have a problem with timing, etc.......anytime you shift into fifth you will usually drop rpm..
I never used 5th that much, I just kept in it 4th at about 2300 and 65 or more.. but it would run ok in 5th, really ok about 75,,
you have a neat 54..

Some fine tuning, like timing & fuel mixture might help some. If it was desined for a V-8, it may have a high overdrive ratio. Some of them had .068 ratio. Most are around 7.2 to 7.8. Some 4 cyl. S-10 trucks had .086 ratio. There should be a tag on one of the rear housing bolts with the tag on it. The ID no. is in the lower left corner. it goes like 1352-xxx. You can match that up to a chart & find the ratio's of the trans. & what it originally came out of. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. It came out of an 88 blazer 6cyl man. But it was rebuilt to go behind an LT1 motor. But I will check for that tag. Where online can I find these charts? | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | They say money can't buy happiness. If your run your numbers using the bottom calculator you'll get some idea of what you've got to work with: http://csgnetwork.com/multirpmcalc.htmlYour problem sounds about one I had when I coupled up a 14 spline S10 .72 OD T5 with a 3.08 Camaro/Firebird diff in my 54 truck. Worked great in 1-4 as a 4 speed but was way on the short side of the torque curve to maintain 5th gear. I went to a 3.42 with a 28" tire and it pulls fine down to 45 mph in 5th gear. Cruise is 70 mph at 2000 rpms with plenty of throttle left at 80 mph. The torque curve in a 235 picks up at 1500 rpms and peaks out at about 2400 rpms. The engine vacuum peaks at 2200 rpms and you want to have your gearing so that your normal driving 55-65 mph is at 1900-2000 rpms. This gives you the ability to drop down to 40-45mph in 5th gear without having to downshift or lugging the engine. I'm currently building up a streetrod/cruiser using the .63 Camaro/Firebird hybrid transmission to go behind a built SBC and I'm set up with a 3.73 R&P with a 28" rear tire. Just have a feeling that your stock 3.90 diff would be more in the ball park for what you've got now. Dumping you exhaust out some shorty exhausts is going to gut your low-end torque to boot. Adding carbs is not going to help you.......run your .63 OD ratio, tire diameter, cruise speed, and R&P and jockey your R&P numbers until you get your favorite cruise speed at 1900-2000 rpms and you'll know what R&P ratio will work best for you. Hope this helps. Plus the tires I have on it are pretty big. I will wait till I get the exhaust on it to see what happens-but thanks | | |
