It is a 3 on the tree with no syncro for first so from what I heard I think that means it a muncie. My problem is that is is really rough at low rpms and blows a lot of black smoke when it starts. should i just rebuild the carb, replace it, replace the whole motor, with another 6 any suggestion at all would be greatly appreciated. | | |

Perhaps a compression test is one of the first things that should be done. Remember to do this with the throttle wide open.
If you remove the carb for rebuilding why not go ahead and install a manifold gasket set. Easily done and can really make a differce in idling if there are leaks.
My opinion, if the compression is good rebuild the carb, put in gaskets, then use a vacuum gauge to seek some more on what is going on. A vacuum test can reveal valve problems, etc.
