I am assuming you are changing to disk. This shield will help protect the inner seal. I have installed it in my disk conversion with stock bearings.
When I disassembled my brakes, one of the shields was missing. I got one from one of the guys on the swap meet board that parts out trucks.
Personally, I will run the rollers until or if they need replacing.

The old seal rode on the outside of the outer race, which went against that shield. The new seal must ride on the spindle itself.
