A few months ago I purchased an electric wiper motor, arms and switch from a 58 on ebay. Tonight when I went to install it it will not fit. The motor hits the firewall. The cab previously had a vacuum set up that used a bracket that angled the vacuum assembly down at an angle. My question is, were the cabs made differently to accomodate the electric wipers or is there some trick or bracket that im missing? It looks exactly like the sketch in the manual.
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.
Brian M | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | the mounts and transmission arms are different between vacuum and electric on the 58/9, you might find the 55-7 electric motor will fit, but otherwise the vendors sell 2 different replacement electrics, one for 58/9 that had vacuum wipers, one for those that had factory electric - the angled bracket is part of the vacuum motor .... 58/9 electric setup .... the 5-7 version uses the same arms as the vacuum Bill | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 122 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 122 | Well I just looked at my other two cabs and they do have a larger area under the dash to accomodate the larger 58-59 wiper motor. I can see by looking in the air vent in front of windshield that the cabs are different. The cab I am using is a big window cab from a 1.5 ton GMC. I changed the dash to chevy and filled all the extra holes in the firewall but never thought about the wiper motor.
I do have a motor from a 57 that will fit. (I think) so ill clean it up and put it in. Its a shame the 59 wiper motor is really nice and complete.

I still have the GMC dash I cut out. Ill measure it when I get home tomorrow night. Thanks again for your response.

I bought an original unit for my 55 2nd years ago and replaced my vacumn unit. It is nice.
