mborth,

It won't run 180 out! You can turn the distributor by hand as the truck runs. Turn it until it runs smoothly. I am not sure of the factory timing on a 250, but 4 degrees before should get you in the ballpark until you find something better.

You may be off by one tooth. If it runs better when you turn the distributor housing one way or the other and you get to the point where you no longer can move the housing you need to carefully pull the distributor. Move the rotor/distributor shaft one tooth in the direction opposite of the direction you turned the housing and it should smooth out. This should get you close enough to set the timing.

I have a 71 250 here and the sticker on the radiator shell says 4 degrees before TDC at 500 rpm automatic (in drive) and same for stick at 550 rpm. Vacuum hoses removed from canister and carb and plugged. Spark plugs gapped at .035. That is what the factory sticker says.

Check the fireing order . You might have crossed a plug wire. Pull a plug & see if it is all black with carbon. This gas we get now can carbon up plugs real easy if you idle a lot or run a little rich. Especially if it,s old gas.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.
