Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 81 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 81 | My clutch pedal has an annoying squeek which I have been unable to stop. I have tried several types of spray lube and pentrating lube. Has anybody out there had this problem and cured it without disassembling the pedal to directly lube it? meansam | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | might investigate if it's the pedal shaft rubbing the side of the hole, as frequently happens when the cab mounts age and settle a tad, or there's been major work done

The push rod goes directly into the rear of the clutch side of the master cylinder. As best I can tell, the squeek is from the clutch pedal rotation on the shaft common to both pedals.I presume it has some kind of bronze bushing but there is no evidence of wear . | | | | | Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 118 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 118 | mine does it, but i havent looked into fixing it. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 564 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Feb 2006 Posts: 564 | Mine does it too. I bought another pedal assembly out of a junkyard truck, and am going to completely rebuild it on the work bench and then swap it in. I doubt they squeaked when new, so a restoration of this assembly is in order.
Drivers me nuts, too!

I was surprised to find out that the springs should be lubed with 30w motor oil. I'm going to try it in a few minutes. Will report the results. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 56 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Sep 2007 Posts: 56 | The shop manual also says that parts should be cleaned with gas. Technology has changed and so have lubrication and cleaning processes. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 81 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 81 | I finally fixed my clutch squeak. It is actually easier that it would appear to be considering what you see when you look up under the dash. 1)disconnect the bolt located at the rear of the clutch shaft (the one going through the firewall into the clutch side of the master cylinder) from the rotating lever mounted on the clutch pedal shaft. This arm can be seen on the right hand side of the steering column. 2)remove the locking bolt clamping the lever onto the rotating shaft. The lever can now be removed from the rotating shaft. The end of the shaft is partially splined mating with splines in in the hole of the lever. 3)pull the clutch pedal to the left a small amount which will free the pedal from the rubber bumper stop. The pedal will now rize up decreasing the return spring tension. 4) disconnect the return spring and the clutch pedal and rotating shaft can be removed.
I found the bushings are either hard plastic or teflon. In spite of being fourty nine years old, they were still in good shape. Very little wear was seen on the clutch shaft. I lubricated the bushings and shaft with wheel bearing grease and reassembled. No more squeak. It takes a little doing but only took about an hour of my time. There are drawungs in the factory manual and also in old MOTOR truck manuals | | | | | Joined: Oct 2005 Posts: 738 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2005 Posts: 738 | My 61 squeaks too...but I am not too concerned with it. There are so many other noises that a creaky clutch pedal is not hi on the list.
