Hello,

I just bought a 56 gmc pickup.
Now i'm trying 2 indentify the engine, but i'm a newbie so can someone help me with some directions.
The block is green underneath the red paint so i think it's a pontiac block.
Some numbers I found are:
1018PY2103 (Serial number)
A756H16416 (Block front of the passengers site)
GM-522010-10 (cilinderheads)
D236 (cilinderheads the 6 could be a five difficault to see)
GMC-2331212-5CC (back of the block passengers site)
3-4-55 (back of block drivers site)
518688 GM-4 (Exhaust manifold)
CA-55-5754 (Is the plate on the hydramatic)

Do you have an 8-cylinder or 6-cylinder engine?
On what side of the engine is the oil filter?

The following information is only a guess.

1018PY2103 (Serial number)
101 = 1/2 ton short bed
8 = 248 engine (or, maybe a V-8 engine?)
P = Pontiac, MI assembly plant
Y = 1955 2nd series
2103 = 1102th 1/2 ton short bed made that year

3-4-55 (back of block drivers site)
March-4th-1955

D236 (cilinderheads the 6 could be a five difficault to see)
D = April
23 = 23rd day
6 (maybe a 5) = 1956 (1955)

CA-55-5754 (Is the plate on the hydra-matic)

And it's a v8 engine

The 8 in the serial number denotes a V8 engine. Pontiac engines were used. You should also find a stamped engine serial number on the lower right side of the block. The first three numbers of that will denote engine displacement.

I believe the serial number for the motor will be found hust above the oil pan on the passenger side. They are hard to read. A 1956 GMC could have left the factory with a 316 cubic inch pontiac motor. It is possible that the motor was changed over the years.

Lets see if we can narrow it down by description.

How many bolts hold the water pump on?
Are there any tubes going into the front of the heads from the timing cover housing/ water pump housing?
What does it have for carburetion?

I went to http://pontiacsafari.com/ and looked up some of the numbers in the garage secton. The only number I could find was for the cylinder heads and it was consistant with a 56 316 engine.

Oke after removing the orange paint between the 2 freeze holes (passengers site)I discovered the number 521560 in the front of the block there was a hard to read GM-6 or 5.

When I look at pontiacsafari.com it should be a 1956 316 cid block
The carburator is a Bendix Stromberg WW
