I want to change my 47 3/4 ton AD P/u front axle to a 1/2 ton I have a chance to buy an axle off of a 55 will it work. I'm gonin to change the rear but there not hard to find. I'm having a little trouble finding the front stuff.

Okay you're dealing with the two years that have two models... You say the '47 is a an AD which I'm assuming is an Advance Design and not an Art Deco. But what '55 is the axle coming off?

If the '55 is a 1st series (Advance Design) the axle swap should be workable, but if its a '55 2nd (Task Force) I don't think its a reasonable swap.

Steve,

The 41-55 1/2 ton axles are the same but the 3/4 ton axle changed in 1953 (same from 46-52). Do you know what changed? (I know this is not relevant to the question but it would be interesting to know).

Tim,
I believe in '53 the 3/4 ton front axles changed to a thrust bushing. '52 and earlier had a thrust bearing. The bushing being much thinner than the bearing, the difference was made up in the length of the king pin boss area on the axle, if that makes any sense.
I have both style axles and have compared/studied them before. I'll take another look at them tomorrow to make sure.

I didn't know about the change in the 3/4-ton axle, but since the question was about going to a 1/2-ton axle I think my answer is still good...

I've only owned one 3/4-ton and its been gone for years. It was a '47. There is a '54 3600 with a Hydra-Matic in my shop today (not mine), and if both where here I could examine the difference.

If I understand the description of the difference it sounds like the spindles would be the same for either one?

Was there a similar change on the 1-tons? I do have a variety of those I could compare.

I'm still trying to decide what to do 3/4 ton brake parts the huck stuff is tuff to work with, no one sells a disc brake conversion kit for it.
