If the same, is the u-joint the same going out of the transmission? | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 | Both transmissions are the same, SM420. No, the front u-joint is different on the three quarter ton than on the half ton. DG

The 1/2 ton units are set up for a torque tube, while the 3/4 ton units were set up for a driveshaft. I believe the 3/4 ton open driveline transmissions were used in the 1/2 tons starting in 54 or 55. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 874 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 874 | 3/4 tons had a torque tube from the transmission to the carrier bearing on those years. Only the back half of the drive shaft was open. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 2,544 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2006 Posts: 2,544 | also the big truck SM420 used a parking brake that was mounted to the rear of the transmission. | | |
