My 66 Chevy 250 six has a code stamped behind the distributor where it is supposed to be. i don't understand the sequence of numbers\letters, as most information I have found states that the first letter is the plant...in my example Flint(F). However most examples state the second digit is related to the date. My second digit is not a number. It is definetly a "I".
Can anyone point me to a good reference? Most of the old searches I have tried took me to dead websites.

I have read GM used the "I" in place of "1" back then. Try mortech.com or nastyz28.com. Brian

I don't get it. I don't see any info there related to engine codes except the last two letters.

I think you are right, I found the following info. from a member on the inliners site...


Some info I found.

First digit for plant:
"F" for Flint, Mi.

Next two digits for the month:

In the 50's and 60's, Chevy used a Roman numeral " I " for the number " 1 " in these engine assembly dates. Don't mistake this for a capitol letter "I".

Next two digits for day of month.
In 50's and 60's the year was not used.

Next the Code:
The "suffix code" Chevy used one to three letters of the alphabet to code the type of engine, transmission and vehicle into the suffix code.

In later years, parts of the Vehicle Identification Number (V.I.N.) were also added before or after the Engine Assembly Date/Suffix code.
