Ok so I am not great at driving a stick and well I will probably burn more clutch's out then I can afford to buy so I am changing the engine over to a 350 and am wondering about getting an automatic tranny, would the 700r4 work? I know this is not what most of you all would do with a truck like this but it is going to be my everyday vehicle, and it needs to be something I know how to use.

Sacramento is pretty flat, so I don't think you need to worry about wearing out the clutch.

If you must go the bent engine route, that is a desirable setup. Personally I think it would be eazier to learn how to drive and replace the clutch than drop the bent engine in.

Trucks like yours, prior to a 55.2, don't swallow a V8 easily. They tend to burp and fart a bit, needing to move the steering box over in order to clear the left exhaust manifold specifically. I would do all I could to keep an inline 6 in it. You might want to look into a 4.2 from a Trailblazer hooked to a modern overdrive automatic. I beleive that to be the ideal update for these old trucks that were designed for inline 6 cylinder.

Yes but I spend a lot of my time in San Fransisco and the Bay. As far as it would be easier to learn to drive it, you are right but I have a bumb leg from Iraq that makes that rather difficult.

Also that 4.2 looks like a good swap, do you know where I can buy a new one at? Or at least a rebuilt one. I checked Jeggs already with no luck went to the GMDirect website they have them but for an arm and a leg, and I cant even tell if it is the right engine. Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry, I didn't mean any disrespect to one of our veterans. When you come to SF look me up and I'll have a cold beer waiting for you!

A 292 would be a fairly straight forward swap in your truck. They are eazier to find than a 4.2, and give plenty of torque and HP. You would have to remove the trans xmember for an automatic, fabricate new front side mounts, and a tailshaft support. The 700R4 will bolt right up to the 292.
