Hi guys, I,m a newby to the site. Encountering a problem replacing cam gear with engine in truck ('62 long bed w/235. Is it permissable to use the thrust washer mounting holes to pull a new gear on to cam???? Blistered hands already trying to do it by hand with 250 degree heated gear & hammer.

I think most would say that the cam needs to come out. the gear gets pressed on in such a way that the correct clearance is obtained between the gear and the thrust washer.

I AGREE THAT WOULD BE THE BEST, BUT IN A BIND & JUST DOING IT TO HELP A FRIEND. ENGINE WAS SUPPOOSED TO HAVE BEEN REBUILT BY PREVIOUS OWNER, STILL HAD PHENOLIC CAM GEAR WHICH FINALLY SWARMED. PROBABLY FACTORY. HAD BAD REAR SEAL LEAK (IN BACKWARD), STUFF LIKE THAT. JUST WORKING OUT THE BUGS. ANYBODY LIKE TO PITCH IN A SUGGESTION??? I'M TRYING TO BE PATIENT AND LISTEN. HA!

Big D,

The camshaft thrust plate is what holds the cam in position. This plate is sandwiched on the cam between a shoulder and the cam gear. If you whack on the gear with the camshaft in the rig you will drive the cam backwards as the thrust plate hasn't been 'sandwiched' until the gear is all the way onto the cam. Does this make sense.

I think there is a soft plug that seals the rear cam bearing too. It wouldn't be good to knock it out as you wailed on the timing gear.

Once your warm gear cools, it will lock up solid on the cam. I can pretty much guarantee you this will happen before you get it positioned properly. If you are bound and determined to do this, be sure to let us know how it turns out.

THANKS FOR YOUR INPUT. I ALREADY DECIDE THE HAMMER DEAL IS OUT. CAN I BLOCK THE CAM FROM BELOW (PAN IS OFF)& USE A PULLER TO PULL ON NEW GEAR USING THRUST WASHER BOLT HOLES TO PULL WITH PULLER? THAT'S MY QUESTION NOW??

I would not advise it. Best would be to pull the cam and have a machine shop press it on.

Big D,

I have enclosed a link to a picture of the thrust plate on the cam. It's hard to describe how it works...the thrust plate is screwed to the block and it holds the cam in place...the thing is, the thrust plate is captured on the cam between the cam gear and a shoulder. If the cam gear isn't up almost tight where it belongs, the thrust plate isn't captured.

Trying to pull the cam gear on with the two screws that hold the thrust plate would merely push the cam out the back of the block. Look at the picture and it will make sense..I hope.
