old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Apr 2009 Posts: 4 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Apr 2009 Posts: 4 | Hey guys,
Not sure if this is the right part of the forum or not, but I had a couple of questions, I was wondering if the front sheet metal off a 50-54 630 or 970 series GMC truck will fit on the regular half ton cab of a 47-54 series GMC advanced design. They look like the same cabs but I am not sure. If they are does anyone know how much longer the nose, is from the front of the cab? Any help would be great. Thanks a bunch guys, love the forum so far. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 5,152 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 5,152 | Welcome to the Stovebolt! Fit as in look like a 1/2-ton truck? No. Fit as in bolt on with a minimum of fabrication? Actually I don't think so, but its worth looking a little harder to be sure. I know the 400 series cabs are similar enough to make it bolt up, or at least all the lines match... I have a 400 series GMC front clip currently sitting on the front of a 1-ton Chevy and the 1-ton Chevy is the same as a 1/2-ton. 500 series might be the same. But I believe the 600 and larger GMC trucks have a different cab design. I know the 900 series are different. If you can find some pictures look at the lower cowl area where it meets the fenders, and the lower parts of the doors. This is a picture of a GMC 970 that appears at shows in my region. I've seen it at ATHS Brooks I think. GMC 970 I just did a quick search through the gallery here and didn't find a good picture of the big but smaller trucks. You might look at some pictures over at www.OldGMCTrucks.com and see if you can find a good picture there.

The 970 trucks I know probably want fit but the 630 and so look almost like the cab is the same. I know the hood is in 4 pieces but it almost looks like it is the same cab with a much larger front end on it | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,101 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,101 | Hy LONG NOSE 37, The 630 stuff will fit, will be about one foot longer, the cabs are the same up to the 600 series, I believe in the 700 series and larger they use a larger cab, reffered to as "the fat boy cab" the doors on these cabs do not roll under at the bottom, as the pickup cabs do, that is how I tell what I'm looking at when I'm looking at stuff in a wrecking yard, hope that helps. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2009 Posts: 4 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Apr 2009 Posts: 4 | That helps a bunch, does anyone know if where to get the front sheetmetal parts for 600 series new or used, I havent seen any new sheetmetal for the 600 series but maybe I havent been looking in the right place. I had another couple of questions does anyone know where you can find a GMC v12 double six 702CI and Does anyone ever see a any 47 and 48 model GMC A series road tractors forsale or know where they could be found | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,964 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,964 | | | | | | Joined: Apr 2009 Posts: 4 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Apr 2009 Posts: 4 | yeah I saw one on ebay about 2 weeks ago that went for like 750 but havent seen another one since, I know there is place that builds hot roded versions of it called thunder v12 I think they are in Illinois. Most of them were absolutely run into the ground. Between the vibration, salted roads, never being garaged and pieces missing that were never replaced made most of them scrap iron. Fire trucks did not have that abuse. Lifting off the fire body, shortening the frame, and adding tractor equipment is nothing compared to hunting parts for a basket case. If you're actually going to pull a trailer, you will want a modern 5th wheel and tractor protection valve and trolley valve anyway. By the way, do you have any idea how much gas a v12 uses? | | |
