I took your advice and copied down the numbers on the block, but when I compaired it to the list I found off of this site it said it could be either a 235 or a 261. These are the numbers I got: the engine casting number says 3837004 with GM5T nearby; the serial # says 0532002T255S with a larger C at the end; finally, I found a number between the starter and the block and it said CGNV1 10J17 55 (I'm not sure if the C and G are correct though... I was having a hard time reading it). I didn't notice any captain's marks on the block, but I could have overlooked them. If anyone has any information or could point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

Captian bars would be on both sides of the block if you had a 261. One of the easier ways to tell a 261 from a 235 is the size of the hole for the oil lines to the filter and sending unit on the drivers side rear of the block. The 261 has 3/4" pipe fittings (very large). Otherwise for the 235 it will be 1/4" or 3/8" pipe threads

For more information on 261s, check out Jim Carter's technical article on "The Forgotten 261 Six Cylinder" (it's not forgotten on this forum). http://www.oldchevytrucks.com/cgi-bin/htmlos.cgi/001097.2.5428224320315357751 Tim | | |
