I just picked up my 1957 GMC half ton last week-
my 1st old GM truck... I've owned a 64 Impala
Super Sport and a 66 Olds Toronado... but no 50's vintage of car or truck till now.

Which motors had the cu inch cast into the block
near the distributor?? I looked upon that oily/dusty/cake-like area today and saw no such
numbers.... I have obviously been lead astray..
ha ha...ok, I've not really reached that conclusion- I'm just trying to figure it out...
there was a TAG... not a cast number.. hiding behind the starter but it appeared to be a remanufacturing data info tag from the 1/2 of it that was visible. I could make out .030, .060, and .030 and the letters "ufactured engine"

Here is known data for identification help

1. 1957 GMC 1/2 Ton, 114 wb, Hydromatic(auto)
2. GMC on the valve cover.. 2 bolts on the
cover.... centerbolts
3. I looked at a 6 in a 70's era Chevy this
afternoon... it had a HEI style cap on the
distributor and it was located towards the
front of the block..... my distributor
is small, with a coil, and is located at
about dead center on the block on the
passenger side..

4. Zenith carb on my intake right now... looks
stock... this truck has most of its original
equipment...complete set of gmc hubcaps,
spare tire carrier is still attached under
the bed...still has original seat in pretty
good shape...what I'm saying here is it
doesn't appear to have been modified ...
STILL has factory automatic in place..
old "army jeep" type tubed skinny tires on
the stock wheels..
5. I am judging this to be a factory Hydromatic
due to the lack of any clutch pedals and the
big "HYDROMATIC" badge on both fenders..
and of course the 50's vintage stock shifter
on the steering column...don't know if hydro
was offered with only specific cubic inch
motors....this is why I'm saying this..

6. "100" badge in the grill

7. partidge in a pear tree... ha, ha..what??!!
it's Christmas time..gotcha!

My digging on the oily-cake on the side of the engine today was under the distributor and
below it and to the left...no dice...

I went to the oldgmc site earlier... but
found no real help..even though I was armed
with my serial number..

So... there is some info for the decifer of
the engine... let me know your guesses and
why your saying that.... and also what I can
do ...or look for to end the mystery...thanks

the "... ufactured engine" is the rebuilders tag, sez remanufactured! they commonly shaved off original stampings

check at Rob\'s site to find out the most likely candidates, might be the 270 or 302
