Drove my 57 to work this morning and when I filled her up with gas I got some blow back and some gas spilled on the paint. Wiped it off immediately. Paint is one year old base coat/clear coat. After just 12 hours the clear now seems to be lifting and has a rough finish in the pattern of the gas spill. The guy that painted the truck (he moved out of state) said when he painted the truck that the modern paints were resistant to gas spills. Is there a problem with the paint or is this typical? What are my options for fixing the finish?

Thanks, Mike

that is not normal, after one year it should be fully cured. people splash gas on there paint all the time without problems. you can try buffing it but sounds like the paint is faulty. good luck.

Dads truck did the samething, two months after it was painted. Had the paint the entire fender. PPG base, clear. There is alcohol in the gas these days, and it don't play well with paint.

Not all Urethanes are created equal. That's a problem with "Cheap" internet paints, and great deals. Just because the paint is cheap doesn't mean it any good. You can spend $330 for a complete paint "kit" and be repainting your truck in a couple of years.

Ever seen a Maaco paint job after a couple of years. That's why they can paint a car so cheap. CHEAP paint.

So save yourself a lot of grief and use a quality paint the first time around.

Frank

No better smell than that of fresh paint. I've been building and painting cars/trucks for 47 years. Not gonna stop now.
