i recently purchased a 1962 c 10
engine was said to be the original 283 but had a mid 80's quadrajet, has the crank breather in the lifter valley.
tank replaced, lines replaced, fuel pump replaced, carb rebuilt, intake pulled and sand blasted, new gaskets...did not used coolant passage tabs. after the intake was reinstalled it has a noise that appears to be coming from the carb....sounds similar to an exhaust noise.
what did i do wrong, i am no pro, but i'm not new at this either.
also, i did not use name brand gaskets.

Allen Roberts,

Welcome to the Stovebolt. I'm not sure what kind of sound would come from the carburetor that would mimic an exhaust sound. I would take a two foot piece of heater hose or a piece of garden hose and, using it as stethoscope, go around the engine listening until you find the noise. This works surprisingly well..good luck and welcome to the site.

I would first check valve adjustment,You might have one tightened down to much.Do you have solid or hydrolic lifters?
Probably hydrolic,What I do is,with the engine running, back off rocker adjustment until it starts tapping then turn back until it stops, then 1/4 turn.If solid lifters ,adjust with specs from
a manual.

very cool,
i am so glad that i found this site. i searched it a month ago after i purchased the truck. not to good at navigation online i kinda bounce around like a pinball.
sorry if i post in the wrong places.
the engine ran very smooth 1 hour after having her off the rollback, even with the nasty gasoline that ruined all the aformentioned parts, it only started this problem after installing everything. but i could have left some unnoticed sand in the intake that found it's way under a valve, could sand keep a valve open enough to cause this?
i will do the stethiscope thing and see what turns up.
thank you guys, i'm like a kid with a new toy for the first time in a long time!

Does the intake match the carb? The early ones had exhaust passages up through the bottom of the carb. If they arn't matched exhaust can come out. Some used a choke tube that went through the manifold. If it burns out it will leak exhaust. You might have wrinkled the intake manifold gasket around the heat passages.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

Cool, that was the problem.
i pulled the carb and could see the traces of carbon on top of the intake that traveled past the gasget to the edge of the intake. i reinstalled the metal gasket to the intake side of the thick spacer and...no more noise!
nice call wrenchbender, and thanks papaj and atomarc for the time and effort. just one of those crazy things that happen when you're in a hurry.
i've seen those passages many times and never understood or cared to find out what they were for. i always assumed they carried coolant or manifold vacuum.
Thanks Very Much for your time.
