Hi everyone,

I am starting to work out some small bugs on my newly acquired 51 3100. The speedometer is not working, however the odometer numbers are moving. The needle on the speedometer does not move as I increase or decrease speed but the needle has been very slowly moving up the dial. It is now reading 30 miles/hour. Do I need to lubricate something and if so how is the best way to get at the needle.

I am new to these trucks so any help is greatly appreciated. I am sure this is just the first of many, many questions from me. Please be patient.

I would say that the head needs to be rebuilt/repaired. There are some threads on here linking to articles on the process. It is not something I would attempt myself but many do.

It is possible that the needle is not secure on the shaft. Once the speedometer is out and the bezel removed lightly twist and lift the needle to remove it, you may realize right then that it was loose on the shaft. To replace; point it at 30mph and lightly twist counterclockwise and push on to shaft, tap it lightly to secure it. No need to say this is a delicate operation and care must be taken. After bezel is reinstalled test with a reversible/variable speed drill attached to the tranny end of speedo cable. That saves you putting it back into the dash only to find out further repair is needed. Good luck!
