The 848 head thats going on my 261 has alignment dowels on each end for the exhaust manifold. These dowels are eroded and rusted significantly. I plan to install dual fenton exhausts and need to remove these dowels and tap the head for standard bolts if necessary. Are these dowels screwed in or pressed in? What is the best way to remove them? Also, I have removed the rocker assy, springs and valves from this head for cleaning and inspection, expecting to find bronze valve guides. Can suitable valve guides be installed on these heads?

Ron B,
I asked this question some time back and I believe someone said they are threaded into the head, though I have yet to see for myself.

Hopefully someone else will chime in here to give more details.

Those alignment pins are threaded just like the other bolts. All of mine have just screwed out with a pair of vise-grips. Treat it just like any other bolt that may be rusty, lub, heat, etc.

Any good machine shop with a seat & guide machine should be able to install bronze, or cast iron guides, your choice.

Got an 848 head on the floor in my office and can concur that they are indeed threaded cause one is missing.
