The 1954 and 1958 mechanical lifters are not the same - you should not use the 54 lifters in a 58 block (I do not know if the opposite is a non-no).
Some people have posted that the 1958 cam provides better performance that the cam used in 1954 235s (but, they will interchange). The 1958 head can be used on the 1954 block and is a higher compression head.
The water pump is another obvious difference between the two-years' engines.

I do see the oil return from the head is external on the 58 where the 54 is inside the push rod cover. I was wanting to keep the orginal engine with the truck but it may be better to put this 58 in my 54 body since the 54 needs a major major overhaul. | | |
