Will soon have power steering(toyota) in my 55. For the time being I'll likely use the existing column...With power steering I shouldn't need the school bus steering wheel. Anyone know what's compatible with the 55-59 spline? Adapters needed?

I put a Camaro wheel on my 1st truck. the spline is the same for a long time... tricky thing is the horn hookup.

Putting on a couple of pounds? A smaller steering wheel makes room for a larger middle section.

You could shorten your column a couple of inches and slide it downward since you're going to cut it anyway. This will also lower your steering wheel position. This works well with the newer steering wheels as they are more dished than the truck steering wheels. There's a '58 running around up here that is modified like that, looks good.

I have seen several times at shows/swap meets that you can buy a repro of a 55-57 car steering wheel of a smaller diameter than stock, I guess for cars retrofitted with P/S. They sure would look cool in a truck. Maybe Danchuck or Classic Chevy World has them.

my truck had this generic wheel and adaptor on it when i got it.

but i went with the factory 18 inch wheel because of manual steering. so i guess if you get an adaptor, you can pretty much run any aftermarket wheel you want.

please post your toyota box swap when you start, because i am very interested in this for my 57.

I recently went to an Ididit column with a 14" Grant wheel (Don't order from grant unless they have it in stock !). That is a very expensive way to go, but works and looks good. I don't see you shortening the existing column unless your good at fabrication. Ididit and Ecklers have adapters for later model steering wheels on early trucks. Just my opinion, but when you change to power steering, and all the changes below that you have to do for that, it really makes sense to go with whatever column / steering wheel you want in the future and do the whole thing at that time instead of breaking the job up into 2 parts like you suggested.
