#52740 11/23/2005 6:22 AM | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 146 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 146 | Just when i had it figured out.....everything changed. my GMC 1 Ton had what i thought was a 216 motor. i bought a GMC owners/drivers manual, and it only lists a 228 until you get into the fc 300 series, which is over 1 ton. then to top it off, i looked at the grills of the heaver trucks and the grill has 3 cross pieces, and half tons have 4. then looking in the gallery, someone says there truck is a half ton, and has the same grill.  i was told that only the 216s had the valve cover bolts through the top. so at this point i have no clue other then the door sticker says i believe 85 hp. (too dark to look now) anyone able to clear this up? :confused: | | |

There is a flat area that has numbers stamped on it. If it is a GMC motor the first three digits are the engine size.
It may be difficult to read the numbers, you may have to do some scraping. | | |

If you have a 228 or 248, your oil pressure gauge will have a full scale of 60 but the 216s would have a full scale of 30. Also, the 228 GMC motors say "GMC" on the valve cover but the 216s do not. | | |
#52748 11/23/2005 9:58 PM | Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 627 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 627 | My 50 1-ton GMC has a 4 bar grille and acorn nuts for the 228 cover but the bigger 47-55 GMCs had 5 cross bars and not 3. The stamped numbers on the flat area to the left of the distributor starts with engine size if GMC. And as truckernix says, GMC script is stamped into the cover. You can see the valve cover in one of my gallery photos. Look for Mike Barnes in the 1950 section if interested. For your sake I hope you have a GMC engine, my 228 is an awesome runner. Good luck!

#52749 11/24/2005 1:26 AM | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 146 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 146 | well it looks like everyone got it right. the engine number is b 2281 86409. and the valve cover has the GMC on it as well as the bolts through the top. and the owners book does list it as a 228 for the smallest size available. so i guess that only getting some info on something can be as bad as no info.thanks for the help everyone. now on to figuring out the voltage it was last run on.  | | |
