Well if any of you were looking at my last post, its not timing anymore, its starting a 216 (I believe). I just got an installed a brand new 12V starter (its a 12V system). And it spun great the first 10-15seconds of cranking and the starter got warm, understandable. We'd try it again and the starter would get progressively slower and turn the engine slower and slower eventually to the point where it would'nt even spin the engine and you could hear it trying but not able to spin it. We tried pulling the plugs and oiling the walls but nothing. When the cranking started to slow we put a battery charger (selected to 12V 400cranking amps) and still nothing other than making the starter get extremely hot. I'm afraid we've fried the starter already (its only 12 hours old).

Any ideas??? I appreciate all the input seeing as I'm a young and inexperienced bolter.

With plugs out, see if you can turn the enigine over by hand at the balancer or by removing the starter and using the ring gear teeth.

Is the starter getting the full 12 volts?

Are you sure the distributer is turning the oil pump?

I'm not sure about the oil pump turning (it ran fine before). I can turn it with the plugs in even and its not too hard to do.

flyinhigh51,

My first thought would be the battery. I would charge it up completely or replace it with a charged, know good one. Clean and check all your cable connections on the battery, the starter and ground cable termination point.

With a fully charged battery and a nice cool starter you might be back in business. When a starter fizzles, it usually stops cranking altogether.

That is exactly what my 51 is doing also. I had my starter looked at by a guy in Iowa, what is it with Iowa? Ha. I think I'm gonna do what atomarc says, and get a new battery. I too did the charger trick, and it heated the cables, and starter so bad, that I think I fried the starter again. If you get yours going, please let me know what you did.
