1949 Chevy 3600 4 speed. Took the transmission apart today.... wasn't meaning to, just wanted to replace gaskets, but here I am. I have a crapload of little pins that came loose from somewhere. So, where can i find detailed diagrams of how to put one back together? (online) This is my first exploration with a transmission, so all the terms are greek to me... I need pictures! :p

Hy Oldcarandtrucknut Those "Pins" are the needle bearings from the back of the input gear. I don't know where to find a breakdown picture online, but you may even be able to find them through links from this sight.

I have the shop manual for my '46, which, IIRC has a different transmission.

If, in fact, I am mistaken (it's been known to happen), I would be more than happy to scan it in for you and post it here.

Ok, ok...I just went through all this so now I'm an expert! (note sarcasm) Those are infact needle bearings and you should replace them from your local hardware store. They are like 1/8 X 3/4" or sometimes 3/16X1/2" or what ever. HERE'S WHERE YOU CAN FIND THE ONLINE DIAGRAM:

This site is GREAT because it lists original parts and specs.You can get new bearings from WJB bearings in Southern Ca. pretty cheap (like $10.85 cheap) just give 'em the part numbers form the old bearings. then cut yourself some new gaskets and you're in like Flint, Michigan...
When you put the new needle bearings back in,stuff some wheel bearing grease into the hole, that'll hold the bearings nicely while you're trying to get em back in.

When you find your pictures and figure out how to put it back togeather dont use heavy grease to pack the needle bearings. Heavy grease will pulg the drain holes and wont let the tranny lube corectly. Use a light grease like vasoline. This will hold the bearings just as well and not plug the drain holes when the gear box is put into use.
