hi folks.

neighbor has a 86 chev blazer he is scrapping. I was thinking of changing out my sigle master cylinder ...for his dual cylinder.

Will this work? other than changing the lines to front and rear. Will the master bolt up and function on my 65 GMC.

thanks for any and all info...

p>s.

what about the power steering will it work also?

You can swap the complete front cross member from the 86 to the 65. The only difficulty is some bolt holes might have to be elongated to align.

hmmm.. ok , I guess the answers are to the power steering? Do I need to change the entire front end or just the steering box and pitman arm?

Also will the booster & brake cylinder just bolt in?

thanks

By "Blazer", do you mean K5 or S10? If it's an S Blazer, the crossmember won't work. If it's a K5 (full size) it will be a 4x4, and comes to the same issue. Full size Blazers were only offered as a 4x4 in '86. You could use the crossmember from a pickup or Suburban, though.

I put a master cylinder and booster from a 76 in my 64. If yours is from the same era it should be the same.
For the most part it did bolt in rather easy.
I had to drill a couple of extra holes in the firewall to get the booster mounting bracket to install (not a big deal as a couple did line up). I believe that I got 4 of the 6. The other 2 were left unused. I also had to trim the steering column bracket clamping point to clear the new power boost bracket.
The hardest part was to make an adapter for the rod that connects to the brake pedal. The newer master cylinder used a different hookup to the master cylinder so I just used the half from to the 76 master cylinder and the half from the 64 brake pedal. Make an adapter and the two will join.
After that I added a late model proportioning valve.
I used it that way for 5 or 6 years. I am now doing a restoration and will most likely put the proper one in (will cost a bit though).

I am now doing the bodywork.
As I progress now my plan is to use a stock type unit for a 64 with power brakes although I will have my front disks. I know I have seen one in LMC. I'm sure there are others.
I've already done the mechanical work including power steering.
Someday I need to add my truck in the gallery with a list of upgrades.

OK... The neighbors S10 Blazer is out..

I did some research and I can get a 64-72 Chevelle Master Cylinder with 1" Bore Dual Piston for Drum Brake for about $75.00

Will this bolt in to my truck and allow me to change to a 2 line system (safety).

Let me know folks. I'm gonna have to replace my single master Cylinder (original is shot) and if I can convert to a 2 line system with just a bolt in ...THEN THAT'S SWEET

Thanks

I just changed my 66 over to a manual( no power) 4 wheel drum dual master cylinder a few weeks ago. Running the lines was the toughest part.

Go to Partsource ( if you have one) or Canadian Tire and ask for a master cylinder from a 68 1/2 ton chevy. ( Impala etc is the same one). It bolts right up exactly the way your old one did. I just had to grind the shoulders of the bolts slightly. Use the same rod from the pedal- you don't even have to adjust it.

I can't find my receipt for it to give you the part number but I'm sure it was only about 35.00

Thanks Dave,

That sounds great. I want a 2 line system.. 1 line systems scare me!

so it was as simple as bolting in and maybe a grinding on the shoulders?

thanks,
Vic (2xcapers)

Straight bolt in!!

There are some bolts just below the master that have shoulders on them that you will need to grind slightly or the flanges on the master won't sit flush on the firewall.

Just took the truck for a drive around the block and the brakes work well- other than they're 4 wheel manual drums. A little more stopping distance than my 07 Liberty with 4 wheel discs!
