Thomas,, as long as you prep all areas you shouldnt have a problem. Everything needs to be sanded.
What I do is sand all primed areas and areas where I want to put color on, with 400 grit sand paper. either by hand or with a D.A. sander If im blending color within the panel or onto an ajacent panel I sand the rest of the Panel and the entire ajacent panel with 800 on a 3m velcro foam pad on a D.A sander , And then use a gray scuff pad on the areas where I cant get the sand paper to.
Or if you dont want to use the 800, you can use 1000 grit wet by hand and then use the gray scuff pad. Once that's done and cleaned properly you should be good to go.
Once all your areas are colored and blended, spray 2 coats of clear over everything.
Good luck, hope this helps.
