Hello wise ones,
My vacuum operated windshield wipers are really slow and weak. Does anyone have a diagram or schematic of how the lines should be connected.
Right now one line goes from the wiper unit to the fuel pump, and the other line from the wiper unit is connected to the intake manifold. Is this correct? and if so can someone recomend a fix or electric wiper moter set up that will bolt in and work.

You most likely have a dual action fuel pump which is supposed to generate more vacuum that if the wiper motor was connected straight to the intake manifold...

Try connecting your wiper motor directly to the intake manifold to see if that changes things..Remember to plug the vacuum port on the fuel pump..

I bought my rebuilt vacuum motor from the Stovebolt Page friend American Classic Trucks in Texas. This was about 4 years ago, and it has been perfect.

why not go for the optional electric? - american classic has elec wiper kits for 58/9 for 165$, or used elec wiper motors listed for 125$ - most vendors have'em for the task force trucks

Also, to loosen up your pump, squirt some silicone aerosol into the vacuum port, it might loosen up the hard grease inside.

Thank you wise ones for your replies but I just looked under the dash and was surprised to see two vacuum lines hooked to the wiper motor. Should I disconnect one of them? one goes from the intake manifold directly to the wiper motor. The other one goes from the carb to the fuel pump then from the fuel pump to the wiper motor. The diagram that was forwarded only shows one line. Please let me know if this other line should be left alone or disconnected and plugged. Thanks

Mine looks like this and only has one tube to hook up.

I would remove the pump and connect it to a vacuum source and see what it does. Probably the only way to find out how it works.

59, the line should run from the wiper motor to the input of the vacuum section on the fuel pump to the manifold. It sounds like your hookup is the problem. Some motors have an inlet and an outlet so you can gang them (like in a jeep) or add a washer unit. It sounds like your vacuum sources are fighting each other.

I bought some silicone aerosol and squirted it in one of the vacuum lines. And now my vacuum wipers work great. Thanks for the advise.

I've read where petroleum jelly (Vasoline) is good to use in vacuum wiper motors, it doesn't get stiff in cold weather like other types of grease.
