Just wondering if it is possible to upgrade the guts to get it to put out more amps like a newer alternator. I have a rebuilt original 283 which has ZERO holes drilled in the front of the heads for bolt on gear....Any suggestions or am I wishing up the wrong tree?

not at all hard to put an alternator on a 283, just find or fab a bracket to mount it where the generator is, hangin off the rams horn

Where did you get the mounting and adjusting brackets that work? I want to slam some tunes in the old dog.

been too long to remember, I prolly modified a generator bracket that was laying around .... I'd hafta look at it again .... it just has to fit the shallower length, so you should be able to weld a tab on the gen bracket to position the pulley to line up - the adjuster arm is an original generator one, if yours is different [there were a variety] it could easily be modified once the alt is in place and you see what's needed

What alternator did you end up getting? Is it the one wire alternator? Do you remember the alternator number so I get the right clock position? Thanks for the help Bill.

not a one wire, scrounged off a 60's truck, it's got an external regulator - any GM alternator will work, with internally regulated being best, just need to work out the wiring, but someone here will have a handle on that

Thanks Bill...still need to locate a bracket cause I am not a welder and rather find one that might bolt on without too much alteration.

Steve,go to ebay and type in 283 alternator bracket.They have the low mount kit for 1955-1968 283 engines.

tim - that'll only work if using side motor mounts, not with the original front mounts

I was thinking of a 1966 327 i use to own.My 327 had the side motor mounts.Those original adjustment brackets for the generators are always on ebay for sale.
I learn something new every time I'm on this site.

go look in a parts store for a bracket for use with headers. say for a 68 camaro/nova with a smallblock. It bolts on the two front bolts and mounts the alt. right where it needs to be. easy fix.
