I was looking at the engine of my '34 and realized after looking at the manual I don't have any pushrod springs. Are these on all the engines or did they leave them off of some?

Ummm,

Not to sound like an ig-nor-ay-moose, but what are pushrod springs? Same thing as "valve springs"?

I'm only familiar with the 216 engine, but I've not heard of any springs in the camshaft-to-valve circuit other than the valve springs, by which I mean the spring that surrounds the protruding stem of the valve which forces the valve in a closed position - until the camshaft eccentric pushes up on the tappet, which pushes the push-rod up, which pushes one side of the rocker arm, which "teeters" to push against the valve stem and spring, opening the valve.

With the valve closed, the clearance should be enough to hold the pushrod in place between the rocker and tappet, but not so much that it won't rotate or "spin" when the valve is closed.

This, of course, all pre-supposes an overhead valve engine. No rocker arms in a flat-head engine (I think?). Still valve springs, though . . .

Well, mikestem it seems this engine--the 206, had springs just above the lifter that returns the lifter to the downward position. They were right above the lifter and went up the pushrod a couple inches . I do have the holddown brackets in a parts can from an engine i picked up but none on the engine I took apart. And no springs, I thought I saw a reference to some people not generaly using them after a rebuild but couldn't access the thread. Like you say the usual springs on the rocker would push back but the gap might shift to between the lifter and cam--these springs would preventthat, that's my guess anyway.i think the GM diesels have these as well like the 453. I would still like to know the ins and outs on this for sure.

I have a manual that shows a dark photo of the installation of those springs. I would guess that is was an invention on Chev's first six that eventually disappeared. I don't understand what they woyuld do either.

maybe so--could be they didn't do much and people eleft them off and that is why they are missing on both engines! Still would like to know for sure.
