I'm rethinking my swap from the noisy granny low 4 speed to an automatic. The closer I get to doing this work, the more I feel that bastardizing this all original, low mile truck this way is just wrong.
Is there a later model 5 speed manual floor shift trans that is a direct bolt in, with little or no irreversible mods? Does a trans from a S-10 fit perfectly with the shifter in the same place?
Motor is 283, rear gear is 373, if that helps.
Thanks for any input. It always amazes me that someone, somewhere in Stovebolt land has already done the exact job I'm thinking of.

I swapped in a later New Process 4spd OD manual trans. It's basically a Mopar 833 4spd OD with Chevy input shaft and tail shaft housing. I'm VERY happy with it.

There are two versions of the trans out there: one has the Chevy bolt pattern, the other has a Mopar bolt pattern and requires the specific aluminum bellhousing that came with it. It also uses a specific Hurst shifter mechanism. There will be a story coming out in a future issue of Custom Classic Trucks with all the info on these transmissions.

I used the stock bellhousing in my '62, the Chevy-bolt pattern case, and had the trans rebuilt and the shifter rebuilt by Hurst--I LOVE it. Humps down the highway in the left lane, reeling in and passing everyone in the right lanes with little effort. It has a .72:1 overdrive.
