Use just enough to keep hone from chattering if using a spring hone. Then I wipe out with ATF and check the quality of the hone pattern.

A good substitute is 30W motor oil and Varsol solvent (mineral spirits), in a 50/50 mix. HOT water, Tide, and lots of elbow grease with a scrub brush is the only way I know to get the residual grit out of the cylinders after honing. I once wore out a set of rings in 2500 miles, from a solvent cleanup after a honing job!
