I have mine set now at 12 advanced with the vac from carb plugged. Seems to run good but almost acts like it could take more. Have'nt heard any spark knock yet but it can't be far off. Like I said just wondering what everyone else has experienced. I have the Mallory dizzy from Patricks, which does not use one. 15 seems to work very well for me.

The BB is just barely visible in the window with the vacuum advance plugged. No pinging, good acceleration (well, for a 235). I plugged the vac at carb and with the vac advance base set at about 5 degrees retard, I set the pointer on the BB then I advance the base to 8 degrees advanced. I have good acceleration and so far no pinging so I guess I'll just keep experimenting. One of these days I'll spring for one of them fancy timing lights myself, just have to figure out how to use it then!
