I'm done with my tranny rebuild and only about a good hour or two away from finishing my 228 rebuild for my '40 GMC.

My questions are:
1) Does the tranny get hot enough that it needs high temp paint?
2) Are the engine, tranny and flywheel housing all supposed to be painted the same color or does it matter?
3) What parts on the engine are supposed to be black (i.e. starter, generator)?

I went ahead and painted the tranny semi-gloss black, but it's not high temp. I can redo it easily now if I need to. The 228 will definitely be getting the factory olive green high temp treatment.

AFAIK the transmissions were not painted at all. The starter, generator and air cleaner were semi gloss black. Engines were painted fully assembled less starter, generator, fuel pump and carburetor.

I'm in the process of putting a new 235 into my '40 GMC. The trans and bellhousing were not painted at all. The original engine was blue/gray. But mine's a Canadian model and had a 224 in it rather than a 216 that it's US cousin uses. Your tranny paint should be fine. You can see photos of mine here:
