I am building a 46 half ton with a 235 (58-62 casting numbers) and open driveshaft. I am using Z28 rear with 3:42 gear and S-10 leaf springs. Originally it had the four speed. I understand that I cannot use my stock bell housing. I think it's the center hole diameter and/or the bolt hole configuration. I am aware that Jim Carter offers a modified bell housing that will accept the stock pedal bracket (or I can fab my own). JK advertises their bell housing as a way to add the synchonized trans from 48-64. What changes in 1965? Input shaft? Center hole? Bolt pattern?

I have a friend with a 56 half ton (V8) and he plans to change from four speed to automatic. If I remember correctly he said it is a 72 four speed and it uses the slide in driveshaft yoke. I prefer that yoke setup since the older four speeds had the yoke integrated to the output shaft. I really don't want to run a two piece driveshaft with a center bearing/slider.

Will the 72 trans bolt up to the 58-62 bell housing? I may just stop worrying about this and go find an older S-10 T5 (or four speed). With the 3:42 I may not really need the OD.

Thanks in advance for all the advice.

I'm assuming you're talking granny box 4 speeds. The SM420 (48 to 67) and the SM465 (68 to 91). The bolt pattern is the same, the hole in the bell housing for the input bearing is larger for the SM465. The early bell housing can be used with the SM465 after the hole is enlarged. For info go to the Novak tranny page

Thanks for the quick answer. I found a granny four speed at a swap meet several months ago that was supposed to be from a 65 3/4 ton. I called the Jim Carter 800 number and they said it would not fit because "everything changed in 1965". Later I sent two emails to the Jim Carter site to understand why and I never got a response.

Yes, I have the granny four speed now but I have already removed the torque tube and rear. Nice Novak web site with the pictures and text. I think I'll buy my friend's SM465 but I may opt for the T-5 later. It doesn't sound like either one is rocket science.
