In my 1953 GMC the speedometer is working but the odometer is not working. The speedometer was rebuilt. Does anyone have an idea of what is wrong?

Speedo is obviously defective, do you have recourse with whomever rebuilt it? Sounds like the gear that drives the odometer is not meshed or is just slipping on shaft.

Buckaroo01 -

Having been through this myself and after having the same speedometer rebuilt twice and it still not working, I decided to take it apart and work on it myself. Here's what I found. Each number is lined up on a shaft and they are properly arranged for them to turn off of the one lower than the one next to it, thus allowing the sequence to work in order when the odometer is functioning. In other words, don't get the number wheels out of order!

They also have spacers, or fillers, on the shaft to keep the gears on the wheels close together. If there are not enough spacers, or fillers, to keep the wheels fairly close together so the gears intermesh and interact off of each other, more spacers need to be added. I did that, and mine has worked fine ever since. That was about 20 years ago. When I had it worked on, each time I took it back, I got a call saying it was ready. After complaining three times, I decided to look at it myself and that's what I found. Fortunately, I had another speedometer to steal spacers, or fillers, off of. All it took was one more spacer (filler).

I would suggest that you tell the guy who worked on it about the spacers, or fillers, or try to fix it yourself. It's not really that hard.

Thanks for the great information, I'll take it out this weekend and take a look at it. I just talked to the guy who rebuilt it and he admitted to having some problems with the odometer that was being supplied from Taiwan. He is willing to repair it at no charge. I'll mention it to him about the spacers.

Try these guys:

They used to be called Ohio Valley Speedometer Supply, and they've been building instruments for over 50 years.
