Can someone help me attempt to adjust the new clutch so that it will disengage? Bought this 49', 3800 series and I'm having no success as to which way to adjust the two nuts.

The clutch nuts should be adjusted toward the rear of the truck to make it looser. If it still does not disengage then you installed the friction disc backwards.

Thanks for the info. I'll give that a try, and I dont know which way the friction plate was put in as the previous owner did that install. And by the way can this visually be detected from simply viewing this from below, after removing the inspection cover?

I'm a rank amateur as a mechanic, but I don't think there is any way you can tell which way the disc was put in unless you actually take it apart. I just put a new clutch in when I rebuilt my motor. Fortunately the disc was marked with a sitck on tag to show which way the disc should go. It was hard to see, but the plate was also marked around the edge. It was a good thing the stick on tag was on there, because I didn't know it mattered, and I couldn't see that much difference from one side to the other, and I probably would have put it in wrong. Bakerallen, appreciate your input, I'm learning always from this Forum. So now I'll ask this question to the Forum, are there any suggestions as to how to proceed with this clutch adjustment, tips, etc.? As you might assume, I'm no mechanic, other than out of neccessity.

thadley baxter,

One of the parameters of clutch adjustment is the freeplay of the clutch pedal. This is the amount the pedal moves downward before meeting resistance. This guarantees the fork will be off the throwout bearing and the clutch will be fully engaged. I don't have a manual to refer to, but I think it was something like 3/4" of an inch of freeplay. As was stated earlier, this freeplay is achieved by adjusting the two bolts on the clutch arm under the truck.

Stuart.

When I replaced the clutch in my 50 a couple of years ago, I had a heck of a time getting it to release. I had cleaned the splines on the tranny well and made sure sure the disc slid easily on it, but no matter how I adjusted the free play it would still hang up and not shift or go into gear without grinding. I finally set the e-brake and kept starting it with the tranny in gear and clutch depressed, then slowly let out the clutch. It finally "broke free". The disc must have been a little cocked on the shaft or something, but it's been fine ever since.
