Update - now running using the GM crank sensor. What this means is there is now a viable alternative to the GM electronics that is fully tunable. I have a good tune file up for a stock 4200 so a person could install the motor, plumb and wire the MS efi system, install my tune up file (its just as easy as file open, save to ecm) and drive off.

The cost of a prebuilt MS is about $400. The only required change is you need to run a cable type throttle body off of a LS1. A simple adapter plate made in under 4 hours on the mill is all that is needed.

This is good information. I've been tossing around the idea of swapping in a 4.2 for quite a while, but still debating converting my 235 to injection using MS or a modified factory computer.

One question on the 4.2 if you don't mind, what does it take to hook it up to a traditional trans? I'm not aware of anything but an automatic behind it from GM. Can an SM420 be hooked to it?

Another guy on inliners is converting his 235 to tbi. There is an adapter that allows Megasquirt to plug into a '88to'92 GM TBI harness without any modifications to the harness. www.diyautotune.com has them.


GM put a manual trans behind the 5 cylinder version of the 4200 in the canyon. If you use the flywheel clutch and bellhousing its a bolt on. I'm working on an adapter plate to allow reg. sbc type bellhousing to bolt up.

If you can get a racing scattersheild bellhousing they have been successfully redrilled to bolt up to the 4200.

The key piece of info here is GM kept the same dowel pin location on the motor which is key to adapting other GM bellhousings.

I believe I'm the person efi-diy is talking about, Im on both here and the inliners site. I have the same exact thread on both forums, inliners thread has a bit more info on putting a tbi on a 235. I update both with my progress. For the time being I'm going to mess around with changing out chips to see what happens. I also have a computer programmer/tuner that plugs into my laptop and the aldl port for the computer and I can monitor whats going on with the engine. If I find out how, id like to remove the egr and vss (maybe), but will see, might send it off to someone to do that.
