Has anyone here installed disc brakes on a stock '50 3/4ton? Its my wife's truck and i'de like her to have updated brakes, but i cant afford to buy a kit.

Ive done it in the past using "junkyard" parts. I have a '71 Jeepster Commando that i converted. Real easy, all i did was took the stock drums and backing plates off. Found some backing plates and calipers/pads from a '77 chevy 1/2ton 4x4 and bolted them on. No modifying required. The bought some rotors for a '78 CJ7. Done.

Does anyone know if theres a way to do something like this to my '50?
PS: it has 8 lug rims.

Hi Rust Lover, my first thought was didn't I just answer this question, then I realized I responded to you on the HAMB and you've taken my advice and come where you'll find more people working on Chevy and GMC trucks.

I would suggest you search in the Engine and Driveline and HiPo Shop areas for disk, disc, 3600, 3800, 3/4-ton and 1-ton.

You'll find a number of threads on the subject, with some of my thoughts and those of others. You get to pick and choose who's ideas you like best.

First off, I'm not part of the Stovebolt Forum police. Anyhow, I too have the same problem you have with my 3600. I haven't tried anything yet but I may try to fabricate something in the future though. I believe a rotor form a late model Chevy 4X4 will slip over the the spindle/hub assmbly. The caliper bracket is another story though. You'll have to fabricate something on your own there. For the rear, try www.TSMMFG.COM, they may also be able to help you out with the front too. Now the other issue is the Master Cylinder. There are plenty of those kits out there from CPP, Master Power, and others.

For a real easy rear disk conversion, take a look at the alte ('01 and newer) 3/4 and 1 ton GM trucks. They have 4 wheel disks as std equipment, and just from what I can tell, the entire brake assemply should be able to bolted up to the original axle. I have not had a chance to measure the mounting flange, but it looks the same as the earlier axles.

If that's a poke at my suggestion someone search the forums you're completely missing my point.

There have been many threads here on this specific subject, and some of the people who have actually tried this conversion no longer post here.

If you are truly interested in this subject you'll spend some time searching and reading the old threads. There is a huge amount of useful information here that is not likely to be repeated each time someone poses a question that comes up every month or so.
