OK - just started here this evening & as mentioned before looking at a 58 with a 235.

Question - How reliable is this engine when mechanically sound? I assume since this engine was used a lot that it was a good engine. Can you guys tell me things to look out for? Does it make good power with a 1 bbl & 50 year old points?

I have owned 10 or so of these 235s and they have all been great. In my 2ton trucks I used to get 10mpg fully loaded going down the Highway. My 2nd car was a 56 chevy car with overdrive and onetime going at 55 I got 25mpg. I never had any trouble with any of them. In 1998 I drove a fully loaded 52 2ton from Manhattan Kansas to Soldotna Alaska 4200 miles and the motor only used 2 quarts of oil. My 1953 1ton has a 216 and someday I'll put in a 235.

The 235 is one of the most reliable engines ever made. Satart out with a compresion check, a tune up and a rebuild if there is something seriously wrong. It will run forever if you take minimal care of it. Check the daily driver forum and browse around the war stories.

'Taint nothing wrong with the 235. I have to ask about your handle. Are you vertically challenged & farm for a living OR do you farm midgets?

Midget farms refers to the size of the farm, more than the size of the man.

I have 2.5 acres of orchard, apples, berries, pears, cherries & chickens.

Now - for a living - I work at a major manufacturer of construction equipment. But lately - that is nothing to brag about.

It seems any manufacturing is dying in this country. It'll be a sad day when we as a country don't know how to build anything. With all the fruit & fowl around your place it sounds like a lot of work but I bet you eat good.

That will give you the idea. It's been a while since I've updated it, but it does OK for now. We love it & have a ton of fun. I bought the antique tractor as my lawn mower & now the truck as the "farm truck".

I checked out your "midget" farm. Looks like a lot of fun. I want to do some small scale "farming" myself with my five and half acres I got out in the country.
